Constructed in 1944, the Glen Cove started it's life as a U.S. Navy yard tug. Built by Ira S. Bushey & Sons in Brooklyn NY, she was assigned to the 8th naval district in New Orleans LA. Having been left in reserve and only lightly used, she found herself on route to the Columbia river OR.
After having been stored in Oregon since 1962, she was bought in 1974 and re-designated Deborah W. She was then taken to Seattle WA where she joined the Marine Leasing Corporation.
In 1977 the Cove was bought by the Simmons Marine Service. They renamed the vessel the Beaver where she was used in and around the west coast.
After a short run in Seattle, she was sold to an Alaskan company where they re-named her the Seahorse. Within a few years she was once again sold, this time to a logging company and named the Silver Bay IX
In 2000 Star Marine purchased our beloved Glen Cove, where she underwent many large changes. Her state rooms were remade, engine repowered, and updated to the latest technology to make her a formidable tug. To this day she is towing Kashega, hauling logs for the paper mill plus helping on jobs that need a large and powerful tug. As the oldest vessel in our fleet, she has truly earnt her place in Star Marine's heart.
Being the oldest in the fleet, the wheelhouse is filled with technology both new and old. The Glen Cove can be driven manually or via a computer with a full suite of integrated electronics aiding our Captains in their duties.
Featuring a single open screw driven by a Lufkin gearbox at a 4.5:1 ratio, that in turn is powered by a single CAT 399 TA at 1,150hp. Together they can pull a formidable 24,000lb.
With a warm and casual gally, the Cove welcomes all its guest to sit and take a load off. With a full stove and two fridge freezers, she is always stocked up for her next maiden voyage.
Helping to tow our large cargo, we have a variety of winches and capstans. The Glen Cove boasts a massive Jagar custom winch, with a 1,200ft 1 5/8" line. Her two capstans, one forward and one aft, pull in our lines for secure, safe loading.
